It’s some 2 months since our last game and to be honest, i’m not missing the smells and excitement at Queensgate. In fact, i’m not missing football at all. I was explaining to a couple of fellow fans at cricket recently, that the start of the footy season means the end of summer in my book, and for the third year running, summer hasn’t started – its so depressing. Plus I want to keep focused for the Ashes which start next week.
In amongst the high profile summer sporting events of Wimbledon, the Ashes, the Lions tour. F1 etc etc, the England U21’s have quietly been going about their business in the Euro championships in Sweden. After defeating the hosts on penalties in the semi’s (we were 3-0 up at half time ), we will play our old footballing nemesis in the final -theĀ Geermans.
Two things that i pondered whilst doing the hugely extensive research for this topic:
1) Why are the British press only just getting into the fact that we are in a strong position to win a footy tournament, we odn’t get the opportunity that often, we last won this in 1984 (when Mark Hately was voted player of the tourney).
2) Why is the final being played on a Monday night ? Nothing like de-valuing your only European show peice event of the year. Monday night for goodness sake.
Good luck to Stuart Pearce (ex-Wealdstone FC) and his lads. Lets hope the next post on here is of you bringing the trophy home, where all European and World trophies belong.
